Public Library of the Year

Lester Public Library of Rome

GRAHIC: Accepting the 2006 Library of the Year Award on behalf of the Lester Public Library of Rome was Director Lore Ponshock. Circulation has increased 84 percent since 2002, and library visits continue an upward trend. According to nominator Pat Welch, “We have gone from being a small town lending library that no one knew about to one of the most used services in the Town of Rome.”

The library offers one adult book club and supports two others within the town, it offers book clubs for fifth- and sixth-graders, it provides ongoing computer classes for basic to intermediate users, and through a literacy grant the library offered programs and kits aimed at children from birth to age 3.

The library’s public computers are in constant use, and the wireless Internet connection has been very popular.

Volunteerism is one of the library’s cornerstones, providing much-needed assistance on busy days but also creating a niche for themselves by:

  • developing and organizing the Friends of the Library organization;
  • working with Pineland School children to improve literacy;
  • reading and presenting crafts for the Preschool Story Hour; and
  • developing activities in conjunction with entertainers for summer program

The library also boasts a teen ex-officio member of the Library Board whose input is crucial to make sure the needs of young library users are considered.

The library also has recently begun a joint venture with the Nekoosa School District and the Charles & JoAnne Lester Library of Nekoosa. The three are in the beginning stages of combining their catalogs onto the school district’s server as a way to give added support to the teachers and students of the school district, and give the town’s residents greater accessibility to a larger selection via the Internet.
