SCLS Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Committee

Minutes of the October 28, 2009 meeting

Present:  Katie Alexander (BAR), Amy Bedessem (POR), Jack Faulkner-Becker (STP), Pearl Mosier (SUN), Heidi Oliversen (SCL), Patty Steele (MFD), Beth Price (MAD), Cheryl Becker (SCA).

July minutes:  Accepted. 

Reports:

• Madison ILL:

  Beth Price reported that Pam Wittig is on a leave of absence.  Beth is now in charge of Outerlibrary Loan. The “interloan” email account is being checked by Beth, but if problems arise, one will probably get faster response if you email Beth directly at the “bprice” email address. Kim Williams has left the department and staffing is low. There may be further shifting of positions. 

  
  Beth discussed a question brought to her attention by Katie as to whether there were still limits on the number of items we may borrow from Milwaukee P.L.  Beth contacted them and found that no limits currently exist. Libraries who do their own borrowing should enter GZD 3 times in the lender field and use them only when the item is no available elsewhere.
  

• SCLS:

  SCLS Administration and Automation offices will be moving Nov. 19-23. The new address is 4610 South Biltmore Lane.   Big changes will be coming in SCLS Governance (discussed later in meeting). The new LINK software changes are planned for Sept. 2010.

  
  WAPL Conference will be April 28-30 in Sheboygan.

  
  An SCLS campaign that allows patrons to share how libraries are important in their lives can be found at www.librariesforreallife.org. Some of our libraries already have the site on their homepages.
  

Changes to governance structure:

Phyllis Davis discussed changes in SCLS governance structure. SCLS will be adopting a new model which will do away with many of the former committees such as ILL, JTC, Reference etc. Clusters have been developed which will have elected representatives from libraries in the cluster. There will be an Administrative Council on which library directors or their designees will be members. Cheryl will subscribe ILL Committee members to the scls-ill list—we can continue to use this list to discuss problems and share ideas. There may be times when a task force will be temporarily pulled together to deal with a specific ILL issue. Nominations are now open for positions on the new committees.

Consequently, today is the last meeting of the ILL Committee. 

Updates, concerns, etc. from committee members:

• Portage: Portage has a new director, Shannon Stiller (starting November 9). The high default replacement cost has been helpful in getting overdue ILL items returned. They are talking about a library expansion.
  
  
• Baraboo: The library has been experiencing problems with a patron abusing the 5 item per week limit by using other family members’ cards. It was suggested they contact the patron to discuss equitable borrowing for all patrons.
  
  
• Sun Prairie: Pearl reported the library now has 3 self-check units which will go online in November.
  
  
• Stevens Point: Rollene Marslender’s ILL position has not been filled. They are getting along okay with some extra help. Jack expressed thanks to Beth and Pam for all their help.
  
  
• Marshfield: Things are busy but going along as usual. Patty questioned whether it would be possible to have lending libraries in Wisconsin include the system to which they belong in the “ship to” information on requests. Beth will make inquiries.
