SCLS Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Committee

Tidbits from the April 18, 2007 meeting

Present: Amy Bedessem (POR), Rollene Marslender (STP), Eric Norton (MCM), Nathan Rybarcyzk (BAR), Patty Steele (MFD), Beth Price and Susan Sanders (MAD), Heidi Oliversen (SCL), Cheryl Becker (SCA), Bruce Smith, Tim Drexler, and Brinnan Schaffer (ZZZ).

Reports:

• Madison ILL:
  • They are juggling and rearranging staff responsibilities.
  • They are purchasing some requested items rather than initiating an ILL request for them.  They've purchased about 20 so far for Madison patrons.  They are putting them in the collection asap. 

• SCLS:
  • A reminder that the Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries (WAPL) Conference will be May 3-4 in Eau Claire.
  • A reminder that WiLSWorld will be July 25-26.
  • The most recent WiLS newsletter (Access)contained some information about Electronic Delivery options, which Cheryl passed on to Beth.
  • Tidbits about WorldCat Resource Sharing (WRS) from the Access newsletter:
    • Requests:  1 million per month!
    • There are 9100 libraries in WRS.
    • 94% of the requests are filled by the third lender, and the average is 1/2 lenders per requests.

Delivery Items Going Astray:

Delivery staff and committee members shared examples of oddly and incorrectly labeled items.  There is no pattern, and the examples are all over the place.  Bruce said this will be a topic at the May State Delivery Meeting.  Sally Drew has said she will talk to MINITEX about the issues.  Cheryl mentioned that there is a statewide Spring ILL meeting coming up, but Bruce felt it would be better to wait until after the discussion at the Delivery meeting.  The following steps will be taken:

• Cheryl will send an email to the scls-ill email list reminding folks about delivery options and labels.  Brinnan will review it before it is sent.  Cheryl and Brinnan will review the info on the ILL and Delivery pages to make sure they are accurate.
• Cheryl will ask Terry Wilcox if the topic of delivery and labeling can be on the statewide Fall ILL meeting agenda.
• Bruce will discuss the topic at the State Delivery meeting in May.
• Bruce will work with Sally Drew and MINITEX on the issue.

Training topics:

A couple of ideas were suggested:  "questions you were always afraid to ask," and requesting newspapers/microfilm/obituaries.  Cheryl will talk to Jean Anderson, CE Coordinator about the possibility of offering one of these in 2007 or 2008.

Other:

At some point, someone raised a question about returned items not disappearing from their "My Requests" list.   The problem is that they won't disappear until the owning library marks them received.  Some libraries seldom do this, and others (notably Library of Congress) never does.  They will disappear eventually.  Cheryl sent an email about this once before, and will send one again.
