SCLS Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Committee
Minutes of the July 12, 2007 meeting
Present: Amy Bedessem (POR), Pearl Mosier (SUN), Nathan Rybarcyzk (BAR, Chair), Pam Wittig (MAD), Heidi Oliversen (SCL), Cheryl Becker (SCA),
Reports:
-
Madison ILL:
-
Shared semiannual lending and borrowing statistics. Borrowing and lending is up compared to the first six months of last year. Fill rate is down items borrowed. This could be due to an increase in requests for media. (51% of all requests received are for media). Fewer libraries are willing to lend some or all media formats. Committee members were asked to look at their requests and let Pam know if their borrowing patterns also show this increased demand for audiovisual materials. Pam will also ask this question via the scls-ill email list.
-
Options for handling the increased demand for media as well as agreements with out-of-state libraries was discussed. No changes are currently planned.
-
“Purchase on Demand” pilot appears to be working well. Statistics will be presented at the next meeting. A discussion on the cost of ILL led to a question about the average cost for an ILL item. Pam will look for the source and share that information at the next meeting.
- Libraries with outstanding requests and/or problem requests can call (608-266-6302) or email (interloan "at" scls.lib.wi.us) the MAD Interloan office.
- SCLS:
- Reported on the Spring RLL ILL meeting held in May. Sally Drew is gathering ILL statistics for a statewide view. The problem of keeping serials holdings up to date was discussed.
- Pam is taking part in a small RLL meeting to discuss interlibrary loan contracts.
- WiLS World is July 25 and 26.
- WLA annual conference is Oct. 16-19 in Green Bay. Joining WLA and Resource Sharing Round Table are worthwhile for ILL staff.
- SCLS, in cooperation with member libraries, has started an online reader’s advisory service called “BookAlikes”. Libraries can link to the online form from your web page. If you or anyone from your library would like to volunteer to be an advisor please let Cheryl know.
- Please review the detailed directory on the SCLS web page and see that any needed corrections are made.
Follow up from last meeting:
- Delivery: Cheryl sent an email to scls-announce with reminders about labeling items for delivery. A new state subcommittee was set up to talk about labeling. They’ve met once. Delivery issues will be on the Fall RLL ILL Meeting Agenda.
- The 2008 CE schedule will probably include a session on how to request newspaper microfilm, census materials, photocopies of obituaries, etc.
Updates, concerns, etc. from members:
- BAR: Nathan is working on a brochure (and web info) for patrons and staff on interlibrary loan. He also wrote help information about newspapers for LINK.
- POR: Amy is getting up to speed as the new ILL person. Things are going well. She will contact MAD ILL about some old requests still in her account.
- SUN: ILL is going well. Circ for ILL is up. Carol Iwanowski, new head of Adult Services, will come to an ILL meeting soon.
Next meeting: October 31.
