Present: Amy Bedessem (POR), Katie Conway (BAR), Rollene Marslender (STP), Pearl Mosier (SUN), Patty Steele (MFD), Heidi Oliversen (SCL), Beth Price (MAD), Cheryl Becker (SCA).
July minutes: Accepted.
Reports:
Madison ILL:
Susan Sanders has left Madison Interloan and moved to California. Position expected to be replaced but not soon. ILLiad lending has been implemented, but not borrowing yet. Beth asked if libraries were getting out of state material when they had indicated they did not want that option. Sequoya is still closed, collection is in storage. Hopefully won’t be too much longer before they are up and running. If the only copy of an item is owned by Sequoya, and patron needs item immediately, request on ILL, otherwise ask them to wait—shouldn’t be more than a couple of weeks, (hopefully).
SCLS:
Cheryl & Katie attended WILS Annual ILL Meeting October 1, 2008. Excellent keynote speaker who spoke on “thinking outside the box about ILL”. MINITEX speaker explained that small libraries currently not on delivery may be someday, this is determined by the volume they do. An email from Bruce regarding Illinois ILL delivery is encouraging. There has been a staffing change and the new person seems to be interested in discussing the possibility. WLA is in Middleton on November 4-7, 2008. Fall Reference and Loan ILL meeting divided time between WISCAT and OCLC, so perhaps OCLC is becoming more accepted as an alternative to WISCAT. In July auto repair databases were on trial with the system, in November we will be experimenting with do-it-yourself databases.
Baraboo Patron Initiated Requesting:
Katie reported that in early September Baraboo patrons started initiating their own requests on OCLC. Approximately 15-20 people are using the system with 70-90 requests per month. The Baraboo library has publicized this service with a display in the library, handouts, and an article also appeared in the local paper.
ILLiad:
ILLiad is an interlibrary loan management software program that will help Madison ILL manage ILL requests. SCLS libraries will notice changes in the request form in WorldCat Resource Sharing. The lending side is fully operational; they are still working out the borrowing side. Libraries will be kept posted. There is also a statewide ILLiad user group forming.
Updates, concerns, etc. from members:
Amy - When requesting microfilm, there is no place on the form to put a photocopy request. The suggestion was to use the SCLS subject form. It is ok to request items via ILL when they have been in lost/trace status for more than eight weeks. This discussion prompted a decision to review lost & trace status. If a patron is anxious to pay for an item, it is acceptable to initiate billing for the item.
Katie - Baraboo is looking for a YA Services librarian. Staffing concerns were discussed. Who covers your interlibrary loan duties when you are on vacation? T here was a general agreement that everyone needs a backup, but this is not always possible in understaffed libraries.
Patty - Busy.
Rollene - Busy. The economic climate is making libraries very popular!
Next meeting: January 14, 2009
Compiled by Rollene Marslender, STP.
