Minutes of April meeting accepted with one correction: In “Library News,” Virginia mentioned a survey that was faculty-only, and the part about email signups should be removed.

SCLS Report

Jean Anderson, CE/Multitype Coordinator, reported on the following:

We are now at full staff! Kerri Hilbelink joined the SCLS Staff on July 2, 2007 as the Electronic Resources Support Specialist and we’re glad to have her on board.

System Celebration reminder: September 20 at Sweet Sophie’s in Waunakee. Each multitype member will receive on invitation (by early August) but can send as many people as you like. Upcoming CEs presented

LSTA – SCLS is working on the 2008 LSTA applications

Special thanks and recognition: thank you to all our outgoing members for their help and guidance to me and to Shawn and Cheryl before me. Jack Faulkner-Becker, Mindy King, Kelly Michaelis, Connie Von Der Heidi (two terms). Also, a special thanks to Virginia Bryan and Gayle Martinson for agreeing to serve a second term. Terms officially end on 8/31 so I’m glad to count you as MALC Board members until then! Thanks a bunch!

MALC Scholarships:

The board received MALC scholarship recipient Cecily Lehman’s report on her attendance at the ACRL National Conference in Baltimore March 29-April 1, 2007. Discussion followed on how to better market the scholarships in order to increase the number of applicants. Decided to see what the MALC activities survey results might indicate.

Job Shadowing:

There are now 10 hosts registered. One visitor has applied and is currently working out scheduling with the host.

MALC Activities Survey:

Jean distributed a draft. It was suggested to add information on how to become a MALC member library (it’s simple, and free).

Committee Appointments:

Six board members’ terms will end August 31:  Jack, Connie, Mindy, Kelly, Virginia and Gayle.  Virginia and Gayle have each agreed to continue for another 2-year term, so four new board members are being sought.  Jean currently has 3 volunteers; still seeking a 4th, someone to represent school libraries. She’ll put out another call for volunteers in September.   The board consists of 11 members: 2 each from public, academic, school and special libraries, plus 3 members at large.

News:

Jack: Portage County P.L. is holding book discussions in conjunction with the A More Perfect Union program sponsored by the Wis. Humanities Council. This year’s theme is “domestic tranquility,” as taken from the U.S. Constitution. Working with UW Stevens Point professors, who are the discussion leaders. Books include Tortilla Curtain, Milagro Bean Field War, Devil’s Highway, and Prodigal Summer, all of which relate to government and the problems of democracy. Stevens Point is also taking part in two community reading initiatives: Reading First, and Community Read. A committee of area teachers, publishers and librarians serves as coordinator.

Connie: Wis. State Law Library is currently making enhancements to its online catalog; adding thousands of e-journal holdings, and working with their vendor on the process of upgrading the web-based catalog. Connie two other WSLL staff will attend the American Assn. of Law Libraries annual meeting in New Orleans July 14-18.

Peggy: Columbus P.L. was represented in the community’s July 4th parade. Their “float” included some “vintage” autos, a large TEEN banner, and McGruff the dog. They’re in the midst of Summer Reading Program, offering geo-caching for teens, programs at the senior center, and a grand finale program on the library lawn.

Virginia: Staff changes at MATC Libraries: Two recent retirements from MATC Library, AV/Resources Librarian (40 years) and Cataloger (14 years). MATC District Librarian will also retire at end of 2007. Planning for that is underway: to promote teambuilding, the downtown librarians will work at Truax 1 day per week; currently working the logistics for that. A new reference librarian started recently at the Truax campus. Downtown library assistant was successful candidate for a 2-year internship with UW-Madison’s Digital Collections department. The libraries are currently working on inventories.

Next Meeting:

January 8, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Von Der Heidi, WSSL
