Review of SCLS Plan and Budget

Phyllis Davis, Director of SCLS, gave some history and background to MALC for the new members of the committee. She also discussed the SCLS Budget and System Plan. The SCLS budget is more conservative for 2008 and we’re still waiting for the state to pass the budget and many counties are still working on theirs. The MALC portion was cut by $5,000. MALC expenditures of the last few years have rarely exceeded $500 or $600 annually so the 2008 amount of $5397 should be sufficient. Phyllis also discussed the Multitype portion of the SCLS System Plan for 2008.

Vicky Billings moved to accept (approve) the 2008 System Budget and Plan, Linda Schmitt seconded the motion and the report was approved unanimously.

SCLS Report

Jean Anderson, CE/Multitype Coordinator, reported on the following:

MALC Activities Survey

Went over the survey question by question and talked about each of the categories.
Other than eliminating the pizza party, no real conclusions could be drawn. Only 19 people responded to the survey and more discussion needs to take place at the next meeting (hopefully with more MALC members)

News:

Linda Schmitt, Belleville Schools reported that Deborah Wiles will be visiting the third through eighth graders and have lunch with them. Deborah Wiles is the author of Freedom Summer; Love, Ruby Lavender; One Wide Sky; Each Little Bird that Sings; and The Aurora County All Stars. Linda started her position with Belleville Schools at the end of August.

Jennifer Friedman, Patient’s Library at Mendota Mental Health Institute has been there since January of 2008. She conducts a book club for the residents and recently completed Of Mice and Men. The book is read in sections and the residents often listen to the book in CD or cassette format. Their next book will be Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

Peggy Kindschi, Columbus Public Library reported that their Summer Reading Program was very successful and they’re getting ready for fall programming. This includes craft Saturdays and after school programs. Currently, they’re working with Columbia County on their 2008 budget and it’s not looking promising. The county has cut all except state mandated funds which could mean cuts to delivery and the large print rotating collection.

Jill Rosenshield, Special Collections at UW Madison. They are currently hosting an exhibit “Under the Medicean Stars: Medici Patronage of Science and Natural History, 1537-1737” in conjunction with an exhibit at the Chazen Museum. They also have a new piece of equipment, a digital color copier, that they’re working on making available to the public. There are some technical and wiring issues that need to be addressed.

Vicky Billings, Portage County Public Library reported that they also had a very successful Summer Reading Program. They are hosting several adult programs this fall: Jennifer Turner, author of My Biker Bodyguard and Thomas H. Johnson, author of Also Called Sacajawea Chief Woman’s Stolen Identity. It’s the 150th anniversary of Kashubs coming to America and Shirley Connolly will be presenting a lecture commemorating the anniversary.

Next Meeting:

January 8, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jean Anderson, SCLS
