MALC Minutes
April 7, 2009

In Attendance
Jean Anderson, SCLS; Vicky Billings, Portage County Public Library; Jennifer Friedman, Mendota Mental Health Institute; Amy O'Shea, Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Julie Gores, MATC: Linda Schmitt, Belleville School District

The meeting was called to order at 10:02.  Linda Schmitt volunteered as note taker.

Minutes

Minutes of the January 6, 2009 meeting were accepted without changes; approved by consensus.

 

Update on Database Linking

Jean reported that the link has been put back on the reference database page for libraries to use with authentication and language. She will put links and language for libraries to use.

 

MALC Scholarship

One application was received for the MALC scholarship to attend ALA. To increase awareness of the scholarship Jean emailed CESA 2, Madison and Portage. She had a great response from Portage. Linda will give Jean contact at CESA and will provide information about MALC and scholarship at CESA 2 Library/Tech meetings. Committee members wondered if they could apply for scholarships.

 

Annual Meeting Discussion

MALC annual meeting will be Wednesday, October 7, instead of Tuesday due to a conflict. Jean said that speakers and foods had been discussed. There could be virtual tours. Mark Ibach could create flyers with information about MALC members, Veteran’s Museum. Linda suggested that the theme of the meeting could be collaboration between libraries. Amy suggested there could be a link to then state of the economy. Julie suggested a panel discussion. Jean said that MALC libraries not on the email list could be contacted through a mailing. The committee will continue to think about the annual meeting. Jean said that it could be held in October, but that other dates could be considered.

SCLS Report
Jean Anderson, CE/Multitype Coordinator, reported the following:

 

Sharing library news

MATC:  Julie reported two librarians have been hired, Jennifer Varshal at Portage, and Shelley Peschel at Watertown. MATC libraries went all out for National Library Week using the theme “It’s a Whole New Ball Game.”

Veteran’s Museum: Amy reported that is using a Teaching America History Grant for collection development and teacher workshops on the prelude to war, war, and its aftermath.

Portage County Public Library: Vicky reported that they are making progress on the new YA/Teen area. For National Library Week, they will have programs on the Iditarod and and Bollywood Dance.

MMHI: Jennifer reported that with the help of the Wisconsin Historical Center has created a conference center exhibit using MMHI historical collection.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:25
