Minutes

Minutes of the July 7, 2009 meeting were accepted; approved by consensus.

Appointment of New Chair

Peggy Smith volunteered to be Chair for 2010.

SCLS Plan and Budget

Phyllis Davis, Director of SCLS, reported on the SCLS Plan and Budget - specifically the part of them that applies to MALC. Phyllis gave some background on MALC and PLAC (Public Library Advisory Committee).  Vicky Billings moved to approve the SCLS Plan and Budget, Amy O'Shea seconded the motion and unanimously approved by committee.

Governance Update

As of January 1, 2010, there will be a new governance structure in place for SCLS. MALC will have a non-voting representative on the Administrative, Technology, and Delivery Committees. It would be best if the representative is on the MALC Committee but it's not necessary. It is preferred, however, that the representative be from a multi-type library and not from a public library.  The representative will report back to the full committee as needed.

SCLS Foundation

The SCLS Foundation honored Peter and Ann Hamon with the first Cornerstone Award which is given to an individual or individuals who have had a significant and long-term impact on enhancing public libraries in South Central Wisconsin and represent the values and mission of the SCLS Foundation.  The award was presented to the Hamon's at a reception on November 11, 2009.

MALC Summit

We think it is likely that we will get the grant, but still have not yet officially heard. The Summit is scheduled for Tuesday, may 18, 2010 at Olbrich Gardens in the Evue Commons Room. Jean will work with Mark Ibach to develop publicity materials. Jean is currently working on speaker ideas (pending the grant funding decision) and will be contacting Sarah Long, former ALA President, as well as some other potential speakers. We need to explore some social networking tools to find a tool appropriate for the information we want to share. We want the outcome of the Summit to be a web-based directory of libraries and their main services/resources with information on accessibility. We plan to use Survey Monkey to gather the data.

SCLS Report

Sharing Library News

Middleton Public Library: The new tween librarian is doing well and is a bundle of energy. Registration is down but attendance is up. The new director is settled in.

Veteran's Museum: They currently have many volunteers and the majority of their time is spent workion on the oral history program. Russ, the reference librarian, is currently on paternity leave.

Globe University: The University is new in Middleton. There are currently 200 students and they are opening another campus on the east side. They will ble hosting an Open House on October 22, 2009.

Mendota Mental Health Institute Patient's Library: Lost 83% of their budget! They cancelled serial subscriptions and are not losing any FTEs at this location. Winnebago is losing 2 FTEs. Mendota is also eliminating the children's unit and sending them it Winnebago so they will not need that collection. They are sitll doing book groups. The Giver and Tuesdays with Morrie are current selections. State agency library budgets are frozen, however, there are currently four prison library openings posted.

Portage County Public Library: Things have been very busy. Two recent speakers were popular, one who spoke about a trip to the Appalachians and a naturalist who spoke about the change of seasons.

UW Business Library: Mid-semester things are very busy. A lot of talk about down-sizing and recently had a speaker come who talked about down-sizing the libraries at the University of Illinois. So, some uneasiness as everyone waits to hear what the plan will be.

Next Meeting

January 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the new location.
