SCLS Marketing & Public Relations Advisory Committee
10 a.m. September 29, 2006

Present: Debbie Bird, Sun Prairie Public Library; Barbara Brewer, Monroe Public Library; Jennifer Endres, Prairie du Sac; Kerry Preece, McMillan (by phone); Linda Olson, MPL; Mark Ibach, SCLS. Also joining us was Cheryl Becker, SCLS.
Unable to attend was Kim Ropson, Marshfield; and Dawn Foster, Portage Public Library, who is unable to continue on the committee because of the commitments of her new position.
- Approve Minutes from 5/26/06 meeting -- Committee members approved the minutes of the May 26, 2006, meeting without change.
- Discuss and finalize the messages to be used for each of the various databases available through SCLS member libraries -- We continued Discussion of major themes to be used to better promote & market various online databases—This discussion focused on the types of questions library patrons might ask , and possible misconceptions about the various databases. This discussion expanded upon the contributions made by committee members through the BaseCamp website. We also made some changes to our user-centric categories, and the appropriate databases. The list below is updated to reflect the results of this meeting.
- Business—Reference USA Business, OverDrive, NetLibrary and ProQuest/EBSCOHost
- Genealogy—HeritageQuest, Ancestry Library, EBSCOHost (historical newspapers), African American Biographical Database
- Consumers—EBSCOHost/ProQuest, Reference USA Business, NetLibrary
- Students/Educators—EBSCOHost/ProQuest and TeachingBooks.net (the idea here is to provide information about how teachers can use other databases for curriculum projects), Also LitFinder, Literature Resource Center, EBSCOHost/Proquest,TeachingBooks.nets, What Do I Read Next?, NetLibrary and OverDrive
- Medical/Fitness/Recreation/Wellness—EBSCO/ProQuest, NetLibrary and OverDrive
- Readers—NetLibrary, NoveList, TeachingBooks.net, What Do I Read Next? OverDrive, Literature Resource Center and LitFinder; and
- Seniors (We decided not to focus on this subset of the population, since their potential questions are addressed in the user-centric categories above.).
- Assignment of activities to specific individuals for next meeting -- During the next several months Mark will attempt to come up with a way of converting the ideas presented on the BaseCamp website into a promotional packet. The goal is to have a draft by the next meeting.
