Scholarship Guidelines

Any employee of a MALC member library may apply for a scholarship. Public library staff, however, are not eligible for these awards and are encouraged to apply for South Central Library System Continuing Education Grants.

Guidelines:
  1. Each fiscal year the MALC Board will award up to two scholarships to help defray the expenses associated with attending meetings, workshops, or conferences which promote professional growth. Scholarships, in the amount of $250.00 each, are awarded for attending a library conference or professional activity. Such activities may include national conferences sponsored by ALA or its divisions, SLA, MLA, AAL, and ACRL or state conferences such as WLA, WEMTA, WAAL, WAPL, or WiLSWorld.

  2. The Scholarship Committee of the MALC Board will select the award recipients and will consider the following criteria:
    1. lack of financial assistance from employer.
    2. potential benefit to the applicant for enhancing skills and professional development.
    3. whether the applicant has previously received a MALC scholarship.

  3. The application deadline for the scholarship awards is April 30th.
    1. Applicants must submit the "MALC Scholarship Application" form prior to the scheduled activity.
    2. The MALC Scholarship Committee will review the applications and make a recommendation to the MALC Board at the April meeting.
    3. The scholarships must be must be used in the same calendar year they are awarded.

  4. Recipients of the scholarships are required to submit a "MALC Scholarship Evaluation" form to Jean Anderson within thirty days after attending the educational activity. Scholarship payment will be authorized after the evaluation form is received.
    1. If for any reason a scholarship cannot be used as requested or duplicate funds become available from an employer, the recipient should immediately notify the SCLS office.
    2. Prepayment of scholarship funds may be granted under special circumstances.
