Lodi Reads Leopold March 5-7

The fifth annual community reading of "A Sand County Almanac" will be held at the Lodi Public Library March 5-7.

The reading begins Friday evening at 7:00 at the Library, 130 Lodi St., and continues Saturday from 1-5 p.m. There will be a dinner Saturday evening at the Best Western Countryside Inn (reservations required), and the reading continues Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Al Carr, an historical actor from Prescott Arizona, will join the Lodi Reads Leopold Program this year. His performance -- 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the library -- brings drama to the character of an older Aldo Leopold reflecting on his life of passionate commitment to conservation and the land ethic. Carr's visit is supported by the Ice Age trail Foundation, the Lodi Schools, and the Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley.

The weekend also includes a Leopold Education Project workshop, Leopold shack tour, Leopold bench building, an Ice Age Trail Hike, and crane watching (some of these activities may require reservations).

For a complete calendar of events, including information about event reservations, visit www.sceniclodivalley.org. More information also is available from Peg at the Lodi Public library, (608) 592-4130. The annual event is sponsored by the Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley.

MJS encourages libraries to celebrate jazz month

In 2002, the Smithsonian Institution announced the observance of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) in April. Although launched by the Smithsonian, JAM is a collective effort by institutions such as (but not limited to) the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Association for Music Education, the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education.

JAM is intended to draw the public's attention to the glories of jazz as both a historical and a living treasure. Its purpose is threefold:

The Madison Jazz Society (MJS) encourages libraries to observe JAM in April. This could include a display of jazz books and recordings available through the library, or an invitation for a local jazz artist or a school jazz band to perform at your library.

For more information about Jazz Appreciation Month visit www.smithsonianjazz.org/jam/jam_start.asp.
