SCLS has LSTA technology funds

It was announced recently on the SCLS-Announce e-mail list that $9,000 of the 2004 LSTA Technology Grant for South Central Library System (SCLS) has been set-aside for patron training projects, but funds are going quickly. The guidelines for distribution of these funds is described below.

SCLS libraries may apply for up to $500 for a patron-training project, which must be related in some way to technology. Some possible training topics include:

Money will be awarded on a "first come, first served" basis. Libraries receiving money will be expected to supply SCLS with a program brochure or flyer and, if possible, the program outline.

To apply for these funds, submit an application form online at psw.scls.lib.wi.us/technology/training/lsta2004form.html.

Libraries applying for these funds will be asked to provide a short description of the program, the dates of the program, the amount requested, and the name of the organization or person to which payment will be made. This can be your library, if you are hiring someone on your staff to do this training "above and beyond" their regular hours, or another agency with which you have contracted to provide the training. A list of possible trainers is available at psw.scls.lib.wi.us/technology/training/lsta2004trainers.html. These are trainers from the SCLS area, including individuals from SCLS public libraries. Trainers other than those included on this list may be used.

Emporium News: Store Grand Opening!

The Library Emporium recently completed its third month online and sales continue to grow. With nine libraries participating and more signing up every day the future can only hold increased possibility for library revenue generation. To date there have been more than 200 positive sales, and the site currently features more than 300 listed auctions and fixed price items. Sales have been finalized with customers in the U.S. and around the world, with packages sent to Italy, Germany, Canada, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

We are proud to announce the opening of our eBay store featuring fixed price listings that complement our online auctions. The store lets customers directly browse our inventory with a site-run search engine, and highlights our inventory with free cross-promotions on these items. This has already proven to generate more bidding activity.

You can visit our SCLS eBay store at http://stores.ebay.com/thelibraryemporium.

Monroe Public Library continues to please online antique dealers by sharing the cherished tomes of times past. Rare copies of Melville’s Moby Dick and signed editions of Poe and Longfellow hardcover books generated interest in their first hour on the block.

The Jane Morgan Memorial Library of Cambria has submitted a large children’s book collection and it is a hit. “Xena the Warrior Princess” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are hot items, and the VHS collections featuring the two heroines sold immediately.

We appreciate all participating libraries and friends groups who have submitted items for sale;

Not participating yet? Have a basement full of stuff and nowhere to sell it? Send it over and we’ll start turning those collections into proceeds for your library. For more information, or to arrange a pick-up, contact Troy Baumann, Library Emporium manager, 1601 Gilson St., Madison, WI 53715, at (608) 266-4809 or (800) 209-8672 (emporium@scls.lib.wi.us).
