SCLS launches redesigned home page
As you may have already noticed, the SCLS "professional services web" page has been overhauled! We've tried to make the page more user-friendly so you'll be able to quickly find the information you need.
At the top of the page there is information about SCLS. The right-hand column has links to library catalogs, our electronic resources page, and current news. The rest of the page lists the services SCLS provides -- with links to the most commonly used resources in that area -- and a link to a page that lists all of the information available in that area.
Along with the new look, there is a new address: www.scls.info. Rest assured that bookmarks to pages on psw.scls.lib.wi.us will continue to work.
This is just part of the changes taking place to make our website work better for you. Future changes include:
If you have comments, questions, or suggestions regarding the redesigned home page, contact Stef Morrill at (608) 245-7970 or by email.
The SCLS Annual Meeting will be held April 21 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells. Online registration closed yesterday (April 14), so if you didn’t register you should contact Heidi Moe at (608) 246-7970 for space availability. To obtain an agenda, or get directions to the Great Wolf Lodge, visit www.scls.info/about/annualmeeting/index.html.
If you have questions about the annual meeting, contact Phyllis Davis, associate director, at (608) 246-7975 or by email.

Posters sought for System Celebration 2005
System Celebration 2005 is still months away (Thursday, Sept. 15, at Morels restaurant in Middleton), but it’s not too early to begin thinking about presenting a poster during the evening’s social hour.
Individual libraries are encouraged to prepare posters about a new construction or renovation project, a successful or unusual library program, a successful advocacy project, or a project to raise funds or obtain volunteer support for the library. If you are interested in preparing a poster for the session, or would like to suggest an idea for a poster, contact Mark Ibach at (608) 246-5612 or by email by June 1, 2005.
System Celebration is our annual thank you to the staff, trustees, and mayors/village presidents of SCLS member libraries for their support and efforts throughout the year.
Jay Robinson to leave Poynette May 5
The Poynette Area Public Library Board met April 12 to accept the resignation of Jay Robinson as library director. Robinson's letter of resignation cited his conscientious objection to war as reason to leave the U.S. His last day at Poynette will be May 5.
He is moving to New Zealand to work on a dairy farm for now and at library work again next year. Robinson said he is very appreciative of his time at Poynette, which included among other things the library’s migration to the LINK system, upgrades in staffing, and preparation of the new five-year library strategic plan. The Board also expressed appreciation for his work in Poynette.
Applications for the position of director should be sent to the Search Committee, Poynette Public Library, P.O. Box 368, Poynette, WI 53955, by April 29.
Kari Lascala is the new circulation assistant at Waunakee Public Library. She replaces Debra Lycke-Scheurell who resigned.
It was announced at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new McFarland Public Library on March 31 that McFarland State Bank President E. David Locke's family foundation will donate $600,000 toward the construction of the new library. Although the donation gives the Locke Family Foundation naming rights to the new library, Locke has not yet decided what the name should be. The new library is being constructed on the former McFarland State Bank site on Main Street.
650 patrons have volunteered to ‘speak up’ for their library
Since the program was announced in a Nov. 30 memo to library directors, more than 650 library patrons have indicated their willingness to “speak up” for their library by signing the yellow campaign cards that are being displayed throughout the South Central Library System.
How well we marshal local patron support for the resources and programs provided by our public libraries will, in large measure, determine the level of influence we can achieve during budgetary and legislative discussions.
The goal of the campaign is to collect patron names and e-mail addresses so we can better educate them about the value and impact of the public library. This is an ongoing effort that can pay potentially significant dividends when we need patrons to “speak up” for libraries at the local, county, or state level.
If you need additional cards or posters (8.5x11 or 11x17), contact Mark Ibach at (608) 246-5612 or by email.
SCLS Communications, Marketing & Advocacy plans available online
As required in the 5-year plan of the South Central Library System, updated communications, marketing and advocacy plans were approved by the Public Library Advisory Committee (PLAC) at its April meeting.
These plans, while approved, are not static documents. They are used to help the system and member libraries manage the various needs in each of the these areas, so changes will be made as needs arise. SCLS member library staff are encouraged to review the plans at www.scls.info/pr/plans/.
