Use of the SCLS Technical Support Specialist
The South Central Library system has a technical support specialist to help with
computers and other technology not connected to the LINK network.
The SCLS technical support specialist will assist libraries
with:
- Purchasing computer hardware and software.
- Installation of software and hardware.
- Troubleshooting hardware, software, and network problems.
While the technical support specialist will help with many
technology-related things, there are some limits:
- Obsolete hardware and software will not be supported (see
the Non-Link Hardware and Software Obsolescence
Policy for details).
- The technical support specialist will not support a library’s
local library catalog system/automated system.
- Libraries are responsible for applying updates needed
for the security and maintenance of the machine, including anti-virus pattern
updates and security updates for Windows and other applications.
- Libraries must decide if the SCLS technical support specialist
is maintaining a particular computer, or if the library is using other technical
support. If a library chooses to use other technical support for a computer,
the SCLS technical support specialist will not support that computer after
other technical support has been used.
- The technical support specialist will only install and support one software program for a specific function (web browsing, word processing, etc.). Alternate applications will not be installed or supported.
- Hardware purchased against the recommendations of the technical support specialist cannot be fully supported. The technical support specialist will provide only routine assistance with troubleshooting this hardware as he is able to, and will provide a quick fix if one is available. He will not spend significant amounts of time researching, repairing or refurbishing hardware purchased against his recommendations.
- The SCLS technical support specialist will not setup
or maintain a library’s wireless laptop lab. SCLS staff may help with the
purchase of the equipment, but the library will be responsible for setup and
ongoing support and maintenance.
