Options for web sites
for South Central public libraries
Option 1: Your web site is hosted and maintained by SCLS staff.
Your web site is created by SCLS staff with your input. You send changes and updates to your pages to SCLS
staff and they do the work for you.
Advantages:
- You do not need to learn about web design.
- You don't have to find - or pay for - web hosting.
- Usage statistics will be available for your library.
Disadvantages:
- Certain advanced development (scripting, for example) may not be possible.
- You do not have direct control over updating your own pages.
Option 2: Your web site is hosted by SCLS, but you maintain it.
Your web site is created by you or by SCLS staff. Your site is hosted
on the SCLS server, but you do your own updates. Please note: This option works only for libraries that are on the LINK network (with some workarounds).
Advantages:
- You have a higher level of control over updates.
- You don't have to find - or pay for - web hosting.
- Usage statistics will be available for your library.
- You can request a "broken link"
report or other help with maintenance.
Disadvantages:
- You will need to devote time to maintaining the site.
- You'll need to know at least a bit about web design, and may have to buy web editing software (e.g. Macromedia Contribute).
- Certain advanced development (scripting, for example) may not be possible.
Option 3: Your web site is hosted someplace else, and you maintain it
yourself.
You create your site and host it on a different server.
Advantages:
- You will have a very high level of control over your site.
Disadvantages:
- You will need to devote time to maintaining the site.
- You will need to find - and pay for - web hosting.
