SCLS SUPPORTS PROGRAMMING EFFORTS OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES
INTRODUCTION TO SCLS PROGRAM SUPPORT MATERIALS
South Central recognizes the important role programming plays
in the delivery of library services to youth. LINK data indicates that circulation
of juvenile materials dramatically increases on days when libraries have programs
for children. SCLS libraries diligently work to provide youth programs throughout
the year; all libraries deserve recognition and support for the services they
provide for children and families.
SCLS helps member libraries provide programs for youth and families. SCLS provides collections of materials, either managed directly by the System or by individual public libraries, which support public library efforts. Descriptions of these collections are included in this brochure. Please contact Shawn Brommer with any questions regarding these collections.
STORY KITS
SCLS has a collection of about 70 story kits and sets of other program materials.
The story kits typically include puppets, flannel board pieces, story props
and scripts, and books related to a central theme. A few of the kits are related
to one story and have many props. There are other non-story kits such as puppets
with book suggestions, a set of ocean science materials, a parachute with
ideas for using it with children during programs, board games, and a box of
games to use in tournaments. A flannel board, magnetic ocean scene board,
shadow puppets, a shadow board set and a small Ellison die cutter are also
available from SCLS Delivery. In addition, auto harps (housed at Middleton
and Poynette) and a button maker (housed at Wisconsin Dells) are available
from the libraries where they are housed.
The story prop materials support public libraries' youth programs. They are to be used only by SCLS member libraries and must be reserved through SCLS delivery. To reserve materials, send an e-mail to Brinnan Shaffer at storykits@scls.lib.wi.us with your request; in order to provide you with the best service, please contact Brinnan as early as possible with your request. Teachers, child care providers and individual patrons cannot borrow the SCLS story kits and other program support materials. Many member libraries provide story kits for patron use. Please contact Shawn Brommer with any questions regarding curriculum kits for public use. (An exception to this requirement is the Native American kit, which was purchased with grant funds and is intended to be shared with area schools. SCLS member libraries can share the Native American kit with educators.)
