Overview
Because of changes being undertaken by Microsoft to improve security, SCLS will be making some changes to the O365 email services which may impact library staff users.
- Highlights
- SCLS will be moving to utilize Modern Authentication for Office 365 services
- Microsoft will begin to permanently disable Basic Authentication on Oct 1, 2022
- Impacts
- Users accessing O365 in a web browser should not be affected
- Most users accessing O365 with clients or apps will not be affected
- Users with older versions of email clients or mail applications may need to update before October 2022 for continuity of service
- Users pulling O365 email into Gmail or another client/program using unsupported protocols like POP or IMAP will need to swtich to a supported method of accessing email
- Recommendations
- SCLS supports access to O365 email using a web browser. URL: mail.scls.info
- To access O365 email on mobile devices, SCLS recommends the Microsoft Outlook application for best compatibility
Timeline and steps
- April 12, 2022 - SCLS will enable (but not force) Modern Authentication for our O365 email users
What are the impacts of this change?
- Applications and clients that are able to use Modern Authentication will begin to use it
- Applications and clients that are unable to use Modern Authentication will continue to use Basic Authentication
- Some users may be logged out of their O365 email/services and prompted to log in again
- In upcoming months - SCLS staff will run reports of O365 clients still using Basic Authentication and provide these to libraries so they can notify users
- October 1, 2022 - Microsoft will no longer support the use of Basic Authentication for O365
What are the impacts of this change?
- Devices or applications that remain configured with unsupported Basic Authentication may lose access to email and O365 services
- Users may need to update their devices’ operating systems/mail clients/apps to be compatible with O365
- Users will no longer be able to pull their O365 email into Gmail or other clients/programs using unsupported protocols like POP or IMAP
