Cybersecurity came up during a public policy conversation recently, and
it got me wondering what, if anything, MPL or SCLS libraries should know/do
about the topic. For example, what are we risking if we plug a patron flash
drive into a *staff* computer? I see that happen frequently in order to
facilitate printing of patron documents. Can we have a conversation about this
sometime soon? Or if you prefer, start at the Tech committee and see what kind of
questions people have. Relatedly, during ALA Annual in June, I heard that LITA
will be rolling out some kind of partnership or professional development with
Readiness Institute. In January, I saw a presentation about a pilot CRI did
with Harford County
i. Libraries with Satellite Smart Switches are ARP, BLV (2), CIA, LDI, MOO, MRO and MTH
i. Weekly (between working ref @ ORE, and circ @ MAD) I usually encounter one or more patrons who are having difficulties logging in because someone has clicked switch user, and they are trying to enter their credentials for your 'admin' user/domain..
It tends to happen less on the Windows 10 or 8.1 machines, so hopefully it is a problem that will go away on its own eventually.
In the meantime, what would it take, or is it even possible for the 'admin' login to have a user picture of a stop-sign or something similar? I often seem to be the only staff that seems to know to check this when folks are unable to log in. We could try to better educate our staff, but only about 25% of our staff routinely provide computer support.
SCLS staff is available to attend cluster meetings to share information and answer questions pertaining to this committee meeting and other departmental projects.
