SCLS Network PC Updates

SCLS staff are now scheduling more frequent updates for SCLS-supported PCs on the SCLS network.

When SCLS sends out updates to SCLS-supported PCs on the SCLS network, we almost always do this at night. Updates at night minimize the amount of disruption to library staff and patrons during business hours.

If you are concerned about power consumption, monitors may be turned off for any PCs at night to save power. Just be sure that your staff knows this is your library's procedure!

All PCs and laptops need to be plugged into power and have a network connection. Stations that do not roam have these taken care of already so they only need to be logged off but left turned on. Roaming laptops for staff or patrons need to be connected to power and double checked to make sure their wireless didn't accidentally get turned off. They now are set to automatically wake at night to get their updates over Enterprise Wireless and shut themselves off again afterwards.

All PCs should be logged off of Windows. Patron PCs will take care of this on their own so it's only the staff machines that need to be logged off. This needs to be done by logging off the PC, not locking it. If you lock the PC instead, the update may fail and/or you may lose data from any programs you leave open.

The regularly scheduled update for the staff PCs is on Monday night. However there can be updates on other nights as well.

Glossary

Roaming: A laptop that does not have a permanent location on a desk or a permanent wired connection.

Deskbound: A PC that has a permanent location on a desk and a wired network connection. All desktop PCs are deskbound and so are any laptops that are connected at a desk.
