Chair Appoinment
Virginia Bryan was the Chair for the January 2008 meeting. Michael Enyart will be the Chair for the remainder of the 2007-2008 term.
SCLS Report
Jean Anderson, CE/Multitype Coordinator, reported on the following:
Gave a reminder about Library Legislative Day (January 22) and mentioned it is possible to sign up for it yet
SCLS is looking for a web specialist
SCLS also looking for new Trustees to serve on the SLCS Board
Bob Blitzke retired as Foundation Director, and a new Director will be sought shortly
CE opportunities:
Linking to SCLS databases from MALC Libraries
SCLS is encouraging MALC Libraries to link to SCLS databases. Kerri Hilbelink is working on appropriate wording for this and Jean will send it out to Committee members when it's completed.
The deadline for the scholarship is February 1. Two scholarships are available, but only one application has been received. Virginia and Vicky volunteered to help review applications, if needed.
MALC Activities Survey
Suggestion was made and approved to sponsor a coffee or cash bar/hors d'oeuvres event at a conference, such as WLA or WAPL. The idea was to provide social networking for MALC Libraries. By piggybacking with a conference, more people might actually attend. Jean will start working on this and our first event will be at WLA this fall.
Suggestion was made to add a link where libraries could register to become a host library. There will be such a link, as well as other pertinent links to the individual libraries, job shadowing information, etc.
Library News:
Michael Enyart suggested that the “Small Business Entrepreneurship” database might be useful across libraries. He will speak to Cheryl Becker about making it one of the databases that gets evaluated. Michael also related that the Google Project is ongoing and the Cutter collection will be the next added to the Project.
Amanda Moss is thrilled to have been appointed to the Newbery Committee.
Vicky Billings discussed the 150th anniversary of Stevens Point and how Portage County Public Library is taking advantage of the anniversary by placing an “ad” in the Events/Programs booklet sponsored by the Downtown Business Association. As people utilize their booklets, they will see the library ad and hopefully, the library will get good publicity and lots of visitors.
Kelly Verheyden mentioned how excited they were to increase hours at two branches, South Madison and Hawthorn. This will be a significant increase in public service hours at these libraries.
Jennifer Friedman is celebrating her one year anniversary at Mendota Institute. She offered two book clubs: one on Of Mice and Men, and the other on Hatchet. Of Mice and Men provoked better discussion than Hatchet. There wasn’t sufficient interest for a Spring group, but perhaps they will resume later in the year.
Virginia Bryan is on the Search/Hiring Committee for a new director for MATC. The whole process is really keeping her occupied these days.
Next Meeting: April 1 , 2008 at 10:00 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Vicky Billings, PCPL
