Options for web sites for SCLS Member Libraries

Option 1: Your web site is hosted by SCLS, and you maintain it.

Your web site is created by SCLS staff with your input. Your site is hosted on the SCLS server, but you update the information on the site yourself.

Advantages:

  • You have a high level of control over the information you provide on your website.
  • You don't have to find - or pay for - web hosting.
  • Usage statistics will be available for your library.
  • You can request help with support, enhancements, and redesigns.

Disadvantages:

  • You will need to devote time to maintaining the site.
  • You'll need to know at least a bit about web design.
  • Certain website changes may only be performed by SCLS staff.
  • Certain advanced development (scripting, for example) may not be possible.

Option 2: Your web site is hosted someplace else, and you maintain it yourself.

You create your site and host it on a different server.

Advantages:

  • You will have a very high level of control over the information you provide on your site.
  • Your website host may provide or support a different choice of software for updating your site.

Disadvantages:

  • You will need to devote time to maintaining the site.
  • You will need to find - and pay for - web hosting.
